The scope, honestly

What Android design actually demands, and an honest note

Android is the harder platform to design well and the harder specialism to find. Most studios are iOS-first or cross-platform, and true Android-native design depth is comparatively rare. This list reflects that honestly: it favours studios with real Material Design and Kotlin track records, and where a studio is strong across platforms rather than Android-first, the profile says so rather than implying a specialism it does not hold.

Android design is defined by things iOS does not face. Material Design 3 and dynamic theming, thousands of device configurations and screen sizes rather than a handful, Jetpack Compose as the modern build target, and a Play Store and hardware landscape far more fragmented than Apple's. A studio that ports an iOS design straight across, ignoring Material conventions, produces an app that feels foreign to Android users.

How to read it

Three checks before you shortlist

1
Ask what they design in, and to.
Material Design 3 fluency and awareness of Jetpack Compose as the build target separate Android-literate studios from iOS shops taking an Android brief.
2
Ask about device fragmentation.
A design system that scales across screen sizes and densities beats a set of fixed screens. This is a bigger problem on Android than anywhere else.
3
Watch for iOS ports.
If the Android work in a portfolio looks identical to the iOS work, down to the navigation, you are looking at a port, not Android design.
