The scope

What counts as mobile app design here

Mobile app design is not web design shrunk to fit a phone. It is a distinct discipline defined by things that have no browser equivalent: platform conventions that differ between iOS and Android, permission and onboarding sequences that decide retention, touch targets and thumb-reach, offline and error states, and the fact that you cannot hotfix a shipped app while it waits in store review.

This list ranks studios on demonstrated mobile craft rather than general design reputation. Each has shipped native or cross-platform apps that reached real users. Where a studio is design-only versus design-and-build, the profile says so, since that gap explains most of the price difference between them.

How to read it

Three checks before you shortlist

1
Check the app is live.
Look it up in the App Store or Google Play, confirm it still exists, and check the last update date. A case-study app that stopped updating years ago tells you the relationship ended.
2
Native or cross-platform.
Most studios here work across both. The meaningful question is whether they design to each platform's conventions or apply one visual system to both regardless.
3
Ask to see the states.
Empty, error, loading, offline, permission-denied. Studios that have shipped will have them and will be glad to be asked.
